Headers and Borders
Headers and borders are an essential part of your bullet journal layout, and can really help to bring an overall theme to your spreads. Below, we will be looking at the different ways to create headers and borders.

What exactly is a header? Basically, in the world of bullet journaling, a header is a title or banner used on each page. They can be simple text, doodles, or a combination – the best thing about bullet journaling is how customizable it is! Whether you opt for a sleek theme throughout your whole journal, a cohesive monthly look, or just a completely random design from page to page, headers and borders are a fun way to bring your vision to life.
Some headers can be created using a very simple black and white design, so don’t be intimidated by an over–the–top design! It is totally okay to start simple and just play around with fonts and doodles done in black pen. Of course, if you do feel up to the challenge, headers can also be full of color and patterns to really pop on the page! It can be super easy to find a color palette that works for you just by spreading out all of your pens and picking out your faves! No matter what color you’re drawn to, we would suggest utilizing smaller headers for weekly spreads to allow more space for all of your journaling needs. Bigger headers can be used for your more decorative pages.
Borders typically match the page header, so once you decide on a style, you can start creating from there. They can be as eye–catching or as simple as you want, just make sure you leave enough room for your spreads – and don’t let your page get too cluttered! You don’t want to overwhelm yourself.
If you want to add more zest to your headers and borders than just a few different colors, you can also create a fun theme! Some journalers use holidays as a theme for their monthly spreads, like a Halloween theme for October, or a Valentine’s theme for February. Random themes can also be fun too, and a refreshing way to break from the norm – you can create headers based off of your favorite game, favorite movie, favorite snack, it really is up to you.
Remember to have fun with your spreads! Headers and borders are accents, and it’s okay to play around until you find the best ones suitable for you. Happy journaling!
