the process behind the works

The process of how I created these pieces and what are the stories behind the scenes.

In figure 1, the composition piece is a poster that serves as an awareness of the endangered red pandas. The idea behind this composition is that the red panda is positioned in a vulnerable state that would make the audience feel empathy for the animals and potentially donate to help prevent their homes from being torn down. The process behind this composition was involved with brainstorming of what endangered animal to choose from, sketches and what kind of typography fits the overall piece. The challenge of this piece was that I had to use text and text wrap as the texture and details. I used the Adobe Illustrator brush to draw out my word in the specific shapes from the main subject.

In figure 2, the fake movie poster is about a mercenary and an alien princess in space teaming up to locate an ancient relic. The process behind this composition was involved with a random selection of what kind of movie genre and rating I would get. I ended up with a PG-13 sci-fi movie. For my sketches I thought about the story first because the story makes the movie poster. The main subject is the hooded figure who is the primary figure and the alien princess who is the secondary figure. The background is galaxy themed to fit the characters in space. The two types of typography chosen play a part that create a dramatic effect in the poster. The “Is it that simple?" text brings a sense of waviness to the audience because they′ll know that locating the relic isn′t going to be a smooth journey and that there is going to be fights.

In figure 3, the illustration consists of two koi fishes circling around each other with lily pad flowers surrounding them. The process behind this illustration was that I had to think of what kind of position the koi fish should be in and what kind of background I want that fits with the fishes. During the research phase, I discovered that koi fish in Japanese is the symbol for friendship and love. This drew me to the process of designing the koi fishes to circle around each other as a sign of companionship whether platonic or romantic. The background was going to be a hue of blue symbolizing water and lily pad flowers filling the space. I made the lily pad flowers pink to stand out against the blue and match the warm colors of the fishes.

In figure 4, the image is a printmaking piece of a wolf with colors of blue, red, orange and yellow creating its outline. The material used to create this composition is a top of a block of wood carved with the wolf and paint used to transfer the wolf to the print paper. The fur was the trickiest part of craving specifically the lines. The idea of the lines in the wolf is to indicate that it is fur. Although the way that the fur looks like in the final print flowing down the wolf reminds me of lava flowing which was a unique result. The color choices of the print was a choice of the usage of complementary colors. Having the blue background and using the warm colors to outline the wolf brought emphasis to the main subject.
